trying new things in 2018
(and a giveaway)!

As 2017 comes to a close, I’m working on planning new patterns, projects, workshops and lots of other new FUN stuff I’ll be sharing in the new year. Stay tuned!

The end of the year is a great time to starting thinking about crafty goals for the year ahead. Learning new skills opens your mind and can get you out of a creative rut. As part of my planning, I’m also thinking about new techniques I want to try and play with in 2018.

You may remember that earlier this year I filmed a segment for Season 2 of Fresh Quilting (check out behind the scenes photos and watch my segment here). I talked about designing your own Hawaiian-inspired motif.

It wasn’t too long ago that I started designing Hawaiian inspired quilts and learned how to needle-turn applique my designs. One of my goals for 2016 was to make my own version of a Hawaiian quilt as a way to commemorate a trip I was taking to Hawaii that year. I wanted a project that I could work on while I was there that I could then reminisce every time I used the quilt. Sometimes learning a new skill or technique can come with new sentimental attachments (and turn into a new obsession—read about mine here).

Both seasons are chock full of modern designers and quilters sharing lots of quilting techniques. Not a member, here’s how to join.

  1. Congratulations on your determination to set goals. Mine are usually rather loose. So, for 2018, I’d like to work out of my stash (other than neutrals as needed). It’s seriously getting out of control and I have so much pretty fabric already. sjvonfumetti at yahoo dot com

    1. Hi Sherry. Good luck with your stash organization! I have on my list of newsletter topics to share some of my stash organization strategies. Stay tuned in 2018 for more!

  2. I want to bring my skill level at quilting–both free-motion and walking-foot–up to the level of my piecing, so I stop dragging my feet on finishes! At least, I think it will help.

  3. Hello! I want to get better at foundation paper piecing. My first attempt was on your Bzzzzzz mini quilt this past weekend and I can’t wait to try more!

  4. As always improving my FMQ skills is at the top of my ‘wanting to improve’ list! I’d also love to improve my pattern writing skills!

  5. I really want to make this the year that I finally spend some time practicing FMQ. I’ve been saying I want to work on it for a couple years now and keep talking myself out of it in favor of simpler straight line techniques. I need to conquer my fear (as Margaret already said)!

  6. I am signed up for a Karen K. Stone machine-pieced EPP technique class and want to give that a try…if I ever get caught up on all the things going currently.

  7. I’m signed up for your Hawaiian applique class at QuiltCon in February, which will definitely be a new technique for me. Looking forward to it!

  8. Ive compiled my Summer break sewing list and it includes a few new things Ive been wanting to try 🙂 collage and applique, might be a fun break after all 🙂

  9. Oh oh…guess who will be binge watching all day today? I happen to have enough time. 😉
I would like to…scratch that. I WILL spend more time on my (fairly) new longarm. I love to fmq and doodle quilt with it, but I need to learn more disciplined ruler work and formal designs. Thanks for the chance to win a MQG membership! I am already a member, but that shopping spree would be fun!

  10. I’ve been quilting for less than a year, so I really need to improve on everything. But the biggest thing is that I’d like to improve on is FMQ. I’ve only done it once. Thank you for the giveaway. (instagram: @mona.phelps)

  11. I would like to to try machine quilting on a quilt. I’ve done smaller projects like coasters and a potholder, but I want to be brave and go I to the quilt now. And finish a baby quilt I started before my daughter was born…5 years ago! thanks for the giveaway opportunity!

  12. As a new quilter I have lots of things on my “learn and try” list.
    My goals for 2018
    1. Hawaiian applique (saw your tutorial). I want to make my own patterns and make some pillows.
    2. Try free motion quilting!! I have done walking foot quilting using decorative stitches and some straight lines – thanks Craftsy !!!

  13. I want to learn appliqué. I’ve always loved Kim Diehl’s quilt books. Thanks for the giveaway. grinnie1961 at gmail dot com
