drunkards path mega coaster tutorial

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Cricut. All reviews on my blog are honest and are my own opinions. I write all of my own posts.

I typically cut all of my fabric for quilt projects with a rotary cutter or scissors but I’ve been having fun exploring all of the cutting options of my new Cricut Maker! I decided to play around with shapes that require careful cutting to achieve good piecing results. The Maker is perfect for this! Once you design your shapes on the computer, the Maker cuts them fairly quickly and precisely. I decided to experiment with the ubiquitous Drunkards Path shape.

Let me share with you how I made my new Drunkards Path Mega Coasters!

What you need to make one coaster measuring 7″ x 7″.
Multiply materials to make more coasters.

• 4 pieces of fabric measuring 5” x  5” (a charm pack is perfect for this project!) for coaster top
• 1 piece of fabric measuring 9” x 9” (or make it scrappy) for coaster back
• 1 piece of batting measuring 9” x 9”
• 1 piece of fabric measuring 2¼” x 42”. for binding
• Cricut Maker for easy fabric cutting! or cut by hand (PDF download link included in instructions)
• Cricut Fabricgrip 12” x 12” mat

Curious about the materials I used?
Fabric: Lemmikki by Lotta Jansdotter for Windham Fabrics
Thread: 50wt cotton by Aurifil
Batting: Warm and Natural by The Warm Company

How to make a coaster:

  1. Cut the Drunkards Path design four times from your 5” x 5” fabric squares.

I designed my drunkard’s path design in Adobe Illustrator then imported the design into Design Space (the program that tells your Cricut Maker what to cut). Unfortunately, Design Space only allows designers to share projects were all images and fonts are created in their program (I design my templates in Adobe Illustrator). I can share the .svg file and you can import it into Design Space. You can download the Drunkard’s Path .svg file here.

Don’t have a Cricut Maker yet? Download the Drunkards Path block PDF template here and cut using a rotary cutter or scissors.

  1. Arrange the Drunkards Path pieces until you’re happy with the design.

  1. Sew the convex pieces to the concave pieces to make 4 mini blocks.

  1. Sew the top left block to the top right block and the bottom left block to the bottom right block.

  2. Sew the top blocks to the bottom blocks.

  3. Make your quilt sandwich. Layer the back (wrong side up), then the batting and then the coaster top (right side up). Baste the layers together using your preferred method.
  4. Quilt as desired. I followed the curved lines of the seams, working ½” away from a quilted line so that I could use the walking foot as a guide.
  5. Trim each coaster to 7″ x 7″.

  6. Bind your coaster. From the binding fabric, cut and join strips with a diagonal seam to create a binding strip measuring 2¼” x 42”. Fold the strip in half lengthwise and bind the coaster using the double-fold binding method.
  7. Make multiple coasters! If you use a 5″ charm pack, it will make plenty of coasters. These coasters make a great gift!

    Would love to make some!
Design space says the pattern is saved as private.
how can I access it in design space?

    1. Hi Shari. Thanks for your kind words! My apologies—I believe the Design Space file is now public. Please let me know if you have any issues accessing it.
      Happy making!

      1. Hi! The file still comes up as private. I am logged into design space. is there something else I need to do? Thank you!

        1. Hi Lisa, My apologies! After a little bit of research today, I discovered that Design Space won’t allow files that weren’t entirely created in Design Space to be public. (I create all of my patterns in Adobe Illustrator and then import as a .svg). Good news—I uploaded the .svg file and you can download it and import it into Design Space. You can find the file here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/5bs6vy2swh3m2n7/wholecirclestudio_drunkardspath3inch_template.svg?dl=0

          Many thanks for your patience!

  2. Just what I was looking for! I’m just finishing up a Neopolitan Quilt from Cricut Access, and a friend told me about a special foot to do curved pieces. I’ve always wanted to do a Drunkard’s Path quilt, and this is perfect for practicing. Thanks so much for the .svg file. Can’t wait to try it.
