Inside the Design of Starry Signs: A Zodiac Block of the Month Quilt Pattern You’ll Love

Hello quilting friends! There’s something magical about a sky full of stars, isn’t there? I’ve always loved looking up at the night sky, but I’m more of a cozy, stay-inside kind of person that gets cold easily than a camper. That’s where the idea for Starry Signs 2025 Block of the Month (BOM) began—I wanted to bring the beauty of the stars indoors and create a quilt that lets you quite literally sleep under the stars.

This quilt is extra special because it’s inspired by the zodiac constellations. Each month, we’ll sew a new block for that month’s zodiac sign, starting with Capricorn in January and ending with Sagittarius in December. By the end of the year, you’ll have a quilt full of stars, ready to cozy up under for years to come. Early Bird Registration is now officially open.

Let’s explore the new Star + Sky quilt design!

How Starry Signs Modern Quilt Pattern Came to Life

Designing this quilt was a journey. There were a few challenges along the way, including choosing which constellations to feature. This was no easy task! There are so many beautiful constellations, but I decided to focus on the 12 zodiac constellations. Not only does this make it perfect for sewing throughout the year, but it also ties the quilt to something personal and meaningful for each of us.

One of the things I love most about this design is how much room there is for customization. Imagine creating a quilt that features your family’s zodiac constellations! For example, my mind is already spinning with ideas for a smaller quilt that includes just my family’s birth signs. Whether you stick with the full zodiac or create something more personal, there’s so much opportunity to make this quilt truly your own.

When creating Starry Signs, I drew inspiration from:

Astronomy books about stars and constellations that gave me so many inspiring ideas.

I started with lots of messy, rough sketches on my iPad. sketch of a purple night sky with stars and moon on an iPad tablet

I used Adobe Illustrator on my computer to further develop the idea. What began as a simple idea slowly grew over the spring and early summer.

I used Illustrator again to create detailed drawings for each of the foundation paper pieced (FPP) blocks.
Star Quilt block options

Then came one of the most fun parts—I experimented with lots of different color palettes and fabric options. The options will inspire you and help guide fabric selection for those quilters who may need it. There are LOTS of details in the Starry Signs Welcome PDF packet that you receive after you register. I’ll also be sharing more on the blog later this month.

A rare sighting of the Northern Lights from my backyard in Connecticut earlier this year—a magical moment that reminded me how incredible the night sky is and served as a “sign” that I was headed in the right direction with this design. I hope you love it as much as I do!

A Quilt That Fits Into Your Busy Life

Quilting is super fun, but it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by big projects. That’s why Starry Signs is designed to be fun, manageable, and inspiring.

• Stitch by Stitch, Progress at Your Pace
Instead of tackling the whole quilt at once, we’ll sew one block each month. This bite-sized approach lets you enjoy the process and stay on track, even when life gets busy.

Learn (or Perfect) Foundation Paper Piecing, FPP
If you’ve an adventurous beginner foundation paper piecing or have struggled with this technique before, don’t worry—I’ve got you covered! Each block comes with clear instructions and bonus video tips to guide you. It’s a great way to learn a new skill or sharpen your techniques.

An Online Community of Quilters
Quilting is even more fun when you share the journey. With Starry Signs, you’ll join an online community of quilters, sharing progress, and connecting over quarterly private Zoom meetings throughout 2025 to our share our love of quilting and creativity.

Color Confidence Made Easy
Picking fabrics doesn’t have to be stressful! I’ve created lots of color palettes and fabric recommendations to help you decide. Or, you can let your creativity shine and pick a palette, including scrappy, that’s totally your own.
