There’s nothing like a project challenge to push you to finish a quilting UFO (unfinished object)! My friends at Aurifil challenged their Artisans to create (or in my case finish) a seasonal project. Today, I’m excited to share with you my Shoreline Sweets mini placemat.

A few years ago I designed and made my first Shoreline Sweets blocks, a foundation paper piecing pattern.

At the time, I made a few of the blocks into “candy coasters”

..and then life got busy and I stashed away some orphan Shoreline Sweets blocks that I made. I recently unearthed them around the same time that I signed up for the Aurifil Artisan Seasonal Project Challenge/Showcase. We’re in the middle of summer here in the northeast USA and for my family and friends that means an annual trip to the New Jersey shore, where you can find colorful salt water candy in all of the boardwalk shops.

I dusted off my remaining blocks, originally foundation paper pieced with Aurifil 50wt, and decided to turn them into a mini placemat, perfect for a bowl of your favorite candy! First up—arranging and sewing the blocks together with Aurifil 50wt. cotton thread. The blocks measure 4.5″ x 9″ and 4.5″ x 18″ so they fit together nicely and can be arranged in multiple ways to create larger quilt layouts.

Next, I went into my Aurifil thread stash to decide which yummy thread colors to quilt the mini placemat. I chose colors (all in 50wt Cotton) that complimented the candy, wrapper and background colors.
Candy: Pink Taffy (4660), Pumpkin (2150), Golden Glow (3920), and Dark Turquoise (4182)
Wrapper: Silver Fox (4670)
Background: White (2024)
